Robin Hood: My German Nickname

A German newspaper called me Robin Hood On The Internet when I was in the thick of my democracy work for Nepal early in 2006. First it was a newspaper article. Apparently that drew some interest. I got an email saying a whole bunch of radio stations in Germany wanted a piece of me. So I showed up at their studio near Grand Central and did the interview. I don't have a copy. But I got told there would be voice over in German, totally understandable.

"Robin Hood Im Internet"

Around the same time I overslept through a BBC talk program where I was supposed to call in. I felt bad.

BBC Calls

When I got called Robin Hood in 2006, I was simply amused. Wow, of all things you would call me that? But now I think I could use that nickname as I gear up to do microfinance work.

If it were not for the fucked up immigration laws in this country, I'd already be on my way.

Pick Up That Bag

Barackface

Barack Obama said to Charlie Rose in 2007: "Only a few years back people were throwing keys at me in the parking lot."

So I am at this event Wednesday afternoon. And I don't even drink wine.

A Few More Events?

When it was time to get started, and people started to sit down, I saw an empty spot and took the seat. A little later one woman, then another came to get their bags. I was too busy tweeting away to give much attention. But my first thought was, oh no, did I just take someone else's seat?

"Was this your seat? You can have it," I said each time. And went right back to tweeting when the response was, "No, that's okay."

Something very similar happened at a political event in 2006, maybe 2007, and I lost it, I blogged about it.

In a different mood, paying more attention, I might have delivered a few choicy one liners.

"You look white trash to me."

If you are not a self-made billionaire, you are white trash. There are only two income brackets that fascinate me: the dollar a day people, and self made billionaires.

"Or maybe you are just another racist bitch."

You don't come to the 21st century with 20th century hangovers. You do and you hurt your wallet, the real wallet: your bank account. The Internet is globalization on steroids.

Me In The New York Times

I Have Been Quoted In Fast Company
Me @ CNN

When I read this article when it came out and blogged about it, I did not realize I was in the picture. I saw a Facebook status from someone else in the picture that made me realize I was in the picture. I looked. There I was. (Two Upheavals Already)

Manhattan’s Tech Start-Ups Settle in the Flatiron District and Chelsea

I remember the day they took this picture. My friend Brad Hargreaves who runs the place - General Assembly, the best coworking space in town - walked over to tell me: "The New York Times is here!"

"I was reading The Economist! Makes me look smart, right Brad?" I said.

Well, they put out a blog post about it, and my picture was not in there. And I blogged out loud saying they filed away the picture of me. I was, of course, kidding. I have some idea of how this works. They take many, many pictures and use one. Ends up they did file it away for later use.

This would be my first time making it to the New York Times. I am going to share this with my family. Although - hold your breath - I think I might show up in the New York Times in a few weeks in my own right, in the body of an article. I got interviewed over the phone. When the journalist asked if I lived in the city, I for a moment thought she might demand I show up in person if I wanted to get featured in the New York Times. I can't say what the article will be about. It might not even make it. Writers have editors. But it's not about my startups. All I am personally hoping for is a link to the blog post of mine that inspired the whole article in the first place. You get a link to your blog from the New York Times and that jacks up your blog's traffic. This blog is already approaching 2K daily.

Don't tell them, but the way I read my New York Times articles is I come across an article, and I search for the title of that article on Twitter, and when you click over from there, the article is free. Is this how people steal movies and music online?

I am a huge fan of the New York Times. I absolutely love their font, which is the font I use at my blogs: Georgia. I also really like the Facebook font.

Meeting Brad Feld

I got to meet Mark Suster yesterday, and Brad Feld today, and I get to meet Vin Vacanti next week. In Vacanti's case it will not be my first time, but still. What do you think is going on? StartUp Week, that's what.

Both Mark and Brad recognized me right away. We have interacted online. I have interacted more with Brad than with Mark. At one point I was trying to get Brad to fund my work into Iran democracy.

"Oh, hey," Brad said when it was my turn to greet him.

"I just wanted to say hello," I said. "It is great to finally meet you in person. You already know this, but I must say TechStars has really shaken up the local tech ecosystem here."

Brad gave a great talk. I was aware of his format from having read some of his blog posts. He will talk briefly, make a few points, and then go straight into Q&A. That is his stated style.

What do Fred Wilson, Chris Dixon and Brad Feld have in common? They all wear the same outfit everyday. It is like they all made their money, and forgot they did. Well, I also wear the same outfit everyday, but I wear fancy, I wear black. Besides, I am bootstrapped.

Brad said he does not do it for money and accolades. He said he does it because he was one of those kids always curious, always asking why. Brad is another of those great entrepreneur turned great VC types.

Him and Fred Wilson go back far. I saw a picture of the two of them together from a long, long time ago. How did they end up in that picture unless they knew each other back then?

Brad said his writer wife Amy decided in 1995 that she was moving to Boulder. If you want, you can come along, she said. And that was Amy's gift to the Boulder tech ecosystem. Brad is absolutely the epicenter of the action there. No Brad, no Boulder. He is like the unofficial Mayor around there or something.

"Marijuana is legal in Boulder," he said. The city also seems to be on the cutting edge when it comes to healthy foods. Soy milk started there, among other things. Whole Foods perhaps.

Of all the states in America, Colorado is the one most like Nepal in terms of physical landscape. Denver even feels like Kathmandu, I have been a few times. I guess I could call Brad a homeboy. Keep the peace up there in the mountains, Brad.

Brad is one of the finest brains in the business. And he is a generous person. Someone as busy as him, and he has answered every single email I ever sent him. That is the treatment he metes out to everybody.

"I don't know how he does that," Fred Wilson says in exasperation.

Fred has a similar NYC story. The wife moved here. He just came along for the ride. The rest, as they say, is history.

Brad shared many insights and stories in his keynote speech of StartUp Week. The one story that really stayed with me was the story of how TechStars got founded. He would have open office hours one day a month for anyone who wanted to drop by for 15 minutes. He would do that for five, six hours until calling it a day. And the guy who ended up being his cofounder diffidently tried to meet up with him, and finally showed up after weeks of trying to get a slot. And that 15 minute conversation started the whole thing.

Think about that. This guy made enough money to last a few lifetimes in the early 1990s. But he was still hungry in 2005. He was still waiting for someone else to show up and share that idea that might still change his life. Today more people know Brad Feld for TechStars than anything else.

What if he did not have those open office hours? Those 15 minute slots? That humility on his part paid off big.

48 Hours

It was two days before Demo Day at Y Combinator and Daniel Gross had moved from product to product like I had changed majors at college. The guy had nothing for Demo Day. The textbook thing to do for Paul Graham was to say, you know what, you had your 12 weeks, tough, you are out. But Paul Graham took the road not taken, and that made all the difference.
